I never spent a lot of time with Mr. Boonstra, but I did spend a significant amount of time with his sons Jo and Dylan. John was always there for his children and seldom missed a sports event. He took time to help coach and never gave his boys special treatment, but rather the opposite. He pushed them to become better men every day and you would be hard pressed to find better children than those of John and Brenda Boonstra. John was stalwart in his faith, working very hard to ensure his children received an education not only in traditional academics, but also one that sought after their spiritual well-being. Personally, my first opportunity to work in a soup kitchen came from spending time with the Boonstras, who all find it in their hearts to continuously give to others. John taught his children the meaning of words such as loyalty, honor, commitment. With these qualities everyone knew, if they ever needed a helping hand, a place to stay, or simply someone to help you through a tough lesson about life, one may always find it at the Boonstra home. His legacy lives on through his loving family, who will continue to spread the lessons John taught to them and we would all benefit greatly to live like this great man, who brought so much good to the world. I love you all, and though I am unable to attend the services for Mr. Boonstra, I want you, his family, to know that you always have been and always will be in my prayers. - Dennis Cagle
